With a nod to [ profile] readthisandweep, our very own patented mercrone ....

50-Word Vignette #24

Prompt: Defiant

Waves kissed the rocks, ivory lace on death-black glass.

"That went well,' Mercrone said.

Mermaid flicked her tail and laughed. "Did you see what they named her?" she asked.

"She lived up to it for a while too,' Mercrone replied as the bowsprit sank from sight with a furious hiss.

She lands in the birch tree, tightrope balanced, singing her morning song.
Brave little bird to risk the topmost branch.
A slow-flapping shadow approaches. Mistress Crow is here.
The tiny bird flutters away, relinquishing her place. A few branches lower she eyes the sky, singing again, defiant to the last.

From here I can never tell. Little black birds chance their wing every day! While the Crow's away, so to speak. ;)

She's here right now, staring across at me as if to say, 'And you've stopped because?'

Perhaps she's considering what little gems she might share with you for your afternoon's work.

Morning's work - I'm a morning writer.
Once I explained, it was just a break, she favoured me with a few small bits of glitter. ;)

This afternoon I'm going to see Yolanda.

Me too. My energies expire in the afternoon, although Mouldy has kept me going through until 3pm on occassion.

i stood there staring at her
“fat cow,” i thought,
“i hate you”
but i like cows
i should call her something else
what ? “big fat blob!”
her voice again “the word is defiant”
i stood mute
NO I won’t!

I was the same with maths.
Mental arithmetic tests were torture for me.
I have to take my shoes off to count to eleven!

(I'm afraid I was defiant.)

I know, my comments sometimes end up in all sorts of odd places. Never fear, I've spotted it, and I'm glad I raised a smile and a laugh :O)

In my head, I refuse to answer their questions.
In my head, I am not afraid of the handcuffs.
In my head, I will not bow to injustice.
I wish I were as brave on the outside.

Love this. I'm a big fan of describing something by saying what it isn't. Or, as you have done here, conjuring the actions a character didn't take. It's a nice technique. I'm sure there's probably a proper term for it.

"Come forth! If you defy us, bring forth your champion! Or -- " The halbard struck the earth. "Acknowledge your new king!"

Silence followed.

A faint breeze blew about the terranced house of the golden city, fluttering curtains.

They couldn't all have left. Even if they had dared defy the challenge. . . .

Okay, so I'm a fan of the Simpsons...

Defiant to the last I say so in fifty words.
Defiant to the last I say so in fifty words.
Defiant to the last I say so in fifty words.
Defiant to the last I say so in fifty words.
Defiant to the last I say so in fifty words.
